Vĩnh Long’s $1 Billion Ambition: Driving Vietnam’s Coconut Export Future

Vĩnh Long province is spearheading Vietnam’s ambitious plan to elevate the coconut sector to a billion-dollar export industry. By targeting $1 billion in coconut export turnover within the next two years, Vĩnh Long is solidifying its position as the undisputed “capital” of Vietnam’s coconut industry. For international B2B buyers and distributors, understanding this strategic shift—focusing on processing technology, standardized farming, and strengthening supply chain linkages—is key to securing future premium supply.

Vĩnh Long: The Strategic Hub for Premium Coconut Supply

Vĩnh Long’s current estimated coconut export turnover is over $500 million for 2025. This success is built on a foundation of unique geographic advantages and significant raw material volume.

Unmatched Natural Advantage

Vĩnh Long boasts nearly 120,000 hectares of coconut groves, representing 65% of Vietnam’s total cultivation area, ensuring the largest and most stable supply of raw material in the country.

  • Mekong Delta Terroir: Situated between the Tiền and Hậu rivers, Vĩnh Long benefits from the abundant alluvial deposits of the Mekong River system. This unique environment allows the coconut palm to thrive, absorbing rich nutrients. This results in fruit with high water content, superior sweetness, and thick meat—crucial qualities for deep processing applications.
  • Top Quality: Vĩnh Long is widely recognized for producing some of the highest-quality coconut in Vietnam, making it highly desirable for high-value export products.

The Value-Added Opportunity

Vietnam’s coconut sector, despite only representing about 2% of global acreage, achieves a value-added factor nearly three times the global average due to extensive product diversification and deep processing. This indicates immense potential for Vĩnh Long to further enhance its value chain, targeting high-value export goods.

Mr. Châu Hữu Trị, Director of the Vĩnh Long Department of Agriculture and Rural Environment’s Agricultural Extension Center, confirms that while the natural advantages are significant, they are not yet fully exploited.

Addressing Supply Chain Challenges for Global Scaling

To reach the $1 billion goal, Vĩnh Long must address fundamental challenges, primarily related to fragmentation and supply chain linkages.

The Challenge of Small-Scale Farming

The current production scale remains fragmented, with the average household cultivating only about 0.4 hectares. This small-scale farming leads to several inefficiencies:

  • Inconsistent Quality: Small scale makes it difficult to standardize saplings, farming procedures, and harvesting techniques. This results in unstable yield and inconsistent fruit quality, posing difficulties for companies requiring standardized raw materials for deep processing and export.
  • Industry Bottlenecks: Despite the presence of 183 processing enterprises in the province, the crucial “4-house” linkage (State, Scientist, Enterprise, Farmer) remains weak. The lack of strong legal commitment causes contracts to break easily when the market fluctuates.

The Organic Coconut Imperative

The demand for high-value organic coconut products is rising. However, clear, unified legal frameworks for traceability, certification processes, and pest control for organic zones are lacking.

  • Sustainability Risk: As Mr. Trị emphasized, a value chain is only sustainable when benefits and risks are shared transparently and fairly among all parties. A month-long pest outbreak can wipe out a year’s worth of production, underscoring the necessity of coordinated pest management.

Commitment to Processing Technology

Positively, local enterprises currently master $90\%$ of Vietnam’s coconut processing technology. Deep processing allows manufacturers to utilize nearly every part of the coconut from food products and handicrafts to activated carbon and organic fertilizers providing vast potential for increasing future export value. Vĩnh Long aims to exceed the $1 billion threshold within two years by leveraging these processing capabilities.

Strategic Solutions for B2B Partnership

The Vĩnh Long agricultural sector recognizes these gaps and is implementing a clear strategy focused on three pillars: sustainable material development, deep processing, and enhanced value chain management.

Raw Material Standardization

Vĩnh Long is focusing on forming international-standard organic coconut zones, managing growing areas with traceability codes, selecting drought and salinity-resistant varieties, and applying low-emission farming practices with water-saving irrigation systems.

Long-Term Value: Mr. Huỳnh Khắc Nhu, CEO of Trabaco, stressed that coconut trees have an economic lifespan exceeding 60 years. Organizing

  • production methodically ensures a long-lasting, reliable value chain. He notes that domestic and $\text{FDI}$ investment is pouring into the sector, but raw material supply is not meeting the massive demand from factories.

Deep Processing and Market Adaptation

Vietnam currently leads the world in canned coconut water exports but lags in deep processing compared to nations like the Philippines and Indonesia.

Maximizing Value: Mr. Phạm Hồng Dương, Deputy General Director of Betrimex, argues that while Vietnam harvests 1.7$ billion coconuts annually (6th globally), the export value could rise from 1.048 billion to $1.8 billion annually by focusing on deep processing. He points out that the current factory demand for raw material exceeds the national supply, yet crude exports persist. Betrimex is willing to pay up to 15,000 VND per industrial-grade coconut for processing, significantly higher than the price farmers get for fresh consumption.

Vĩnh Long will offer incentives to attract modern deep processing technology, utilizing all parts of the coconut (water, meat, husk, shell) to increase product value and apply 4.0$ technology for quality control and traceability.
