Cashew introduction – Where do cashews grow in the world?
First of all, cashews are not actually nuts, but rather fruits from the cashew tree, a large evergreen tree that thrives in tropical climates. The tree produces red flowers, which in turn produce yellow and red oval structures resembling apples. These so-called cashew apples are very juicy and pulpy, and their juice is often added to tropical fruit drinks. Cashews do have shells, actually like two walls. The thin outer shell is smooth and glasslike. The inner shell is hard and must be cracked like other nuts. The fruits are picked by hand, and the nuts are usually first detached, then sun-dried.
Cashew trees originate from Brazil in the tropics of South America and are gradually distributed to Africa, Asia, and Australia. Today, cashew trees are widely grown all over the world. Cashew trees can withstand in places with diverse and harsh climatic conditions. As a high-temperature plant that is very sensitive to cold, the tropical climate with a distinct dry season is the right condition for the cashew tree to grow best.
According to the FAO in the world, there are currently over 32 commercial cashew-producing countries, but cashew trees grow well only in countries in the tropics and subtropics.
