– The two countries launched the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate) at COP26 climate talks in November, aiming for $4 billion investment from governments and non-government innovation partners between 2021-2025.

The US farming industry is already battling the effects of climate change, including increased drought and flooding. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently said it would invest $1 billion in pilot projects for climate-smart commodities, promoting farming, ranching and forestry practices.

Brazil is one of the major coffee exporting countries in the world. Therefore, the coffee situation here is very important for the coffee market, especially the indicators of changes in production output.

  • The Brazilian government projected that farmers in the world’s largest coffee producer and exporter will harvest 55.74 million bags in 2022, 16.8% more than in the previous year, but an amount that is smaller than most in the market expect.
  • Brazil’s food supply agency Conab estimated the production of arabica coffee at 38.78 million bags, 23% more than in 2021, as the country enters the “on-year” in arabica’s biennial production cycle.
  • Output of robusta coffee was seen 4% larger at 16.9 million bags. Robusta output has been rising in Brazil with more planting in new frontiers such as Bahia.
  • Total production will still be far from the record in 2020, which Conab put at 63 million bags.

Brazil’s coffee production is key to balance the global supply. A smaller-than-average crop could cause a deficit.

Brazil has gained ground as a supplier to the Arab market. Thanks to the diversity of soils, the country develops different varieties of the product throughout the country.

  • Brazilian pepper exports to the Arab League states have risen above the average. From 2017 to 2021, black pepper sales to this market increased by 47.5% in tonnes and 41.7% in value per year. • The marked increase is believed to be related to a larger promotion of the Brazilian product in the Eastern markets. Besides, it could be from the establishment of new trade ties between national companies and buyers based in the region.
  • In 2020, Brazil ranked second among the largest black pepper exporters in the world, accounting for 15% of the total sales. The country was only behind Vietnam, which accounts for 41.5% of the global trade.
  •  In 2021, black pepper production reached 145,000 tonnes, while exports amounted to 92,000 tonnes. Some of the top importers are Germany, United States, United Arab Emirates and Egypt. The Arab market, led by the UAE and Egypt, imported some 26,5000 tonnes of black pepper last year.
